Hi there! Thanks for visiting my blog! As a mom of 2 Canadian-born Chinese (CBC) children, I have struggled with teaching my kids Cantonese since they were born. I speak fluent Canto but my husband doesn’t (he’s learning!) so we mainly speak English at home.
To make up for my failure as a mom, I have religiously sent my kids to Chinese School since they were 4 years old. However, if I’m honest with myself, Chinese school benefits me more than my kids. It’s basically enriched babysitting that allows my husband and I to have a date night every Friday night. Now my kids are 9 and 6 and they don’t want to go to Chinese School anymore so I finally decided that I can’t be so selfish anymore. So I’m going to get serious about teaching them myself. As I teach them, I’m going to blog about it so that it reminds me what I’ve already taught my kids, they can refer back to the lessons as they need, and hopefully it will inspire you too!
These lessons are made for my situation so it’s not going to work if you don’t know any Cantonese to begin with. For every English phrase, I’ve included the Chinese words (for those of us who can read Chinese) and the jyutping so the kids can pronounce the word phonetically. I’ll also try to include any tips on how I try to make it fun for them.
The key is repetition repetition repetition! Just teach one phrase at a time and make it fun. If you have any tips, let me know in the comments section. Thanks!
